Joseph Paradis Design creates engineered bespoke furniture for private clients and professional design partners, blending engineering precision with artistic form.

My Story

My path to furniture design is rooted in engineering, aviation, and a lifelong fascination with how things are made. As a mechanical engineer working in aerospace and VIP aircraft interiors, I spent years designing and developing highly constrained systems where precision, structure, and reliability were non-negotiable.

Prior to my career in engineering, I trained and flew as a private pilot, developing an early appreciation for balance, load paths, and the quiet elegance of well-resolved mechanical systems. These experiences shape the way I approach design — with discipline, attention to detail, and an understanding of the relationship between form and function.

Furniture became a natural extension of this mindset. Where aerospace engineering demanded performance and rigor, furniture design offered an opportunity to apply those same principles in a more tactile, expressive way. Each piece I design is informed by the same analytical thinking and attention to detail I once applied to aircraft interiors, resulting in work that is both technically sound and visually considered.

Philosophy

My work sits at the intersection of structure and expression. I believe good design emerges when engineering logic informs aesthetic decisions, and when materials are allowed to behave honestly and with purpose.

Rather than treating structure as something to be hidden, I often choose to make it visible — allowing joints, connections, and mechanical elements to become part of the visual language. This approach results in furniture that feels grounded, intentional, and quietly expressive, where beauty is a consequence of clarity rather than decoration.

Artisanal Craftsmanship

Quality and longevity are fundamental to my work. Every piece is designed with a clear understanding of how it will be built, assembled, and used over time.

By combining precise engineering with skilled fabrication, I aim to create furniture that feels solid, refined, and enduring — objects that reward close inspection and develop character through use rather than wear.

Sustainable Practices

Sustainability is approached through thoughtful design and responsible material choices. By prioritizing durable construction, reparability, and timeless design, each piece is intended to have a long and meaningful life.

Where possible, materials are chosen with longevity and purpose in mind — favoring clarity and necessity over excess.

Bespoke Design

I work closely with private clients, architects, and interior designers to develop custom furniture solutions tailored to their specific spatial, functional, and material requirements.

Each project follows a considered process — from early conversation and concept development to detailed design, collaboration with makers, and final fabrication. This collaborative approach ensures that every piece is not only visually aligned with its setting, but also structurally sound, durable, and resolved down to the smallest detail.

Let’s Begin a Conversation

Whether you are considering a bespoke commission or exploring a potential collaboration, I welcome the opportunity to discuss your project and ideas. Each engagement begins with a conversation — thoughtful, open, and grounded in shared intent.
